1. Introduction

This Behaviour Management Policy outlines the standards and procedures for promoting positive behaviour and managing challenging behaviour among children attending our camp. We are committed to providing a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment where all children are treated with respect and dignity. This policy aligns with the principles set out in the Department for Education (DfE) guidance and the EYFS statutory framework (where applicable).

2. Aims and Objectives

  • To promote a positive, inclusive, and respectful camp culture.

  • To encourage self-discipline, empathy, and responsibility.

  • To support staff in managing behaviour effectively and consistently.

  • To ensure that children understand acceptable and unacceptable behaviours.

  • To identify and address behavioural concerns early and appropriately.

3. Promoting Positive Behaviour

Staff are expected to:

  • Act as positive role models.

  • Use praise and encouragement to reinforce positive behaviour.

  • Create a structured and engaging environment.

  • Establish clear expectations and boundaries from the outset.

  • Communicate rules in an age-appropriate and inclusive way.

4. Camp Rules
Our basic camp rules include:

  • Be kind and respectful to others.

  • Listen and follow instructions.

  • Keep hands and feet to yourself.

  • Respect camp property and the belongings of others.

  • Stay safe and within designated areas.

5. Behaviour Management Techniques

Staff will use the following techniques:

  • Positive reinforcement: Praising desired behaviour.

  • Distraction and redirection: Re-engaging children in a new activity to avoid escalation.

  • Clear choices: Offering two acceptable alternatives.

  • Calm-down strategies: Providing time and space for reflection (e.g., quiet corner, mindfulness activity).

  • Reflective conversation: Helping children understand their actions and their consequences.

6. Unacceptable Behaviour
Examples of unacceptable behaviour include:

  • Physical aggression or fighting

  • Bullying or name-calling

  • Disrespecting staff or peers

  • Intentional damage to property

  • Running away from group supervision

7. Responding to Challenging Behaviour

  • Staff will intervene early and calmly.

  • The behaviour will be addressed, not the child.

  • Consequences will be proportionate, explained clearly, and follow our stepped approach:

    • Verbal reminder

    • Time out or quiet time

    • Discussion with a staff member

    • Involvement of parents/carers (if behaviour is ongoing or serious)

    • Suspension or exclusion (in extreme cases, with management decision and recordkeeping)

8. Individual Behaviour Plans
Where children present ongoing behavioural challenges, an individual behaviour plan may be created in consultation with the child, their parent/carer, and relevant professionals if necessary.

9. Bullying
We have a zero-tolerance policy towards bullying. Any suspected incidents of bullying will be taken seriously, investigated promptly, and addressed appropriately.

10. Physical Intervention
Physical intervention will only be used as a last resort to prevent harm to the child or others. Any use of physical intervention will:

  • Be reasonable, proportionate, and necessary.

  • Be recorded and reported to parents and management.

  • Be in line with government guidance (Use of Reasonable Force, 2013).

11. Staff Support and Training
All staff will:

  • Receive behaviour management training during induction.

  • Be supported by management in handling complex cases.

  • Reflect on incidents to improve practices through debriefs and team discussions.

12. Communication with Parents
We value partnership with parents and will:

  • Inform them of behavioural expectations at registration.

  • Communicate concerns at an early stage.

  • Collaborate on strategies to support the child.

13. Monitoring and Review
The policy will be reviewed annually and updated as necessary. Behaviour logs and incident reports will be monitored to evaluate effectiveness.
